Die PlayStation 3 erschien 2006 in Japan und USA und dann ein paar Monate später 2007 auch in Europa. Und dieses Mal war nicht alles Sonnenschein was mit der PlayStation 3 passierte. Die ersten PlayStation 3 Versionen waren noch kompatibel (u.a. die sogenannte „Dicke Bertha“) zur PlayStation 1 und PlayStation 2. Die späteren Fassungen verzichteten dann komplett auf Abwärtskompatibilität. Der Chip dafür wurde einfach weggespart. Auch das Line-Up wirkte nicht mehr so stark wie zur Zeiten von PlayStation 1 und PlayStation 2. Und dann war da ja noch die Wii, die wesentlich günstiger war und den Markt nahezu dominierte. Auch wenn die PS3 das Blu-ray-Format unterstützte, war die PlayStation 3 trotz knapp 88 Millionen verkauften Exemplaren ein Rückschritt für Sony.
The PlayStation 3 was released in Japan and the USA in 2006 and then a few months later in Europe in 2007. And this time it wasn’t all sunshine and roses with the PlayStation 3. The first PlayStation 3 versions were still compatible (including the so-called ‘Fat Bertha’) with the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2. The later versions then dispensed with backwards compatibility completely. The chip for this was simply omitted. The line-up was also no longer as strong as in the days of PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2, and then there was the Wii, which was much cheaper and almost dominated the market. Even though the PS3 supported the Blu-ray format, the PlayStation 3 was a step backwards for Sony despite selling almost 88 million units.
