Der Sega Mega Drive bzw. Sega Genesis erschien 1988 in Japan, 1989 in USA und dann auch 1990 in Europa. Wie schon das Sega Master System gibt es den Mega Drive in Brasilien immer noch. Obwohl das Mega Drive in einigen Teilen der Welt kurzzeitig sogar erfolgreicher als der Super Nintendo war, wollte Sega noch mehr und mittels Add Ons wie Sega 32X oder Sega CD wollte man noch mehr erreichen. Diese Erweiterungen brachten aber nicht den gewünschten Erfolg. Immerhin verkaufte sich der Mega Drive bzw. Genesis 35 Millionen Mal.
