Der Atari 7800 aus der 3. Konsolengeneration erschien 1986 in den USA und ein Jahr später auch in Europa. Vom Design richtet sich der 7800er oder das Atari 7800 ProSystem sehr an den Atari 2600 Junior. Auf dem Atari 7800 war es auch möglich 2600 Spiele zu zocken (was auf dem 5200 nicht möglich war). Allerdings war 1992 auch schon wieder Ende mit dem System, obwohl sich das Gameslibrary zum Schluss deutlich abhob von den ersten Games vom 7800er. Es wurden über 1 Millionen Einheiten von der Konsole verkauft.
