Commodores nächster Heimcomputerversuch nach dem Commodore Pet begann 1980 mit dem Commodore VC-20 (in USA als VIC-20 – für Deutschland als Name recht ungeeignet – if you know, you know, in Japan als VIC-1001). Der „Volkscomputer“ sollte sich einen Platz als Heimcomputer sichern. 1985 endete der Zyklus des Commodore VC-20 und insgesamt wurden 2,5 Millionen Rechner verkauft.
