Nachdem Atari mit dem 2600 sich den Heimkonsolenmarkt gesichert hatte und mit guten Arcades auch einen Namen gemacht hat, wollte man nun in den Heimcomputermarkt. 1979 ging man mit dem Atari 400 die ersten Schritte, um später mit dem 600er und schließlich dem 800er sich einen Platz in der 8 Bit zu sichern. Von den Rechnern wurden insgesamt 4 Millionen verkauft. 1992 endete erst der Lebenszyklus der Atari 8 Bit Familie.
After Atari had secured the home console market with the 2600 and made a name for itself with good arcades, it now wanted to enter the home computer market. In 1979, the first steps were taken with the Atari 400, followed by the 600 and finally the 800 to secure a place in the 8-bit market. A total of 4 million of these computers were sold. The life cycle of the Atari 8-bit family only ended in 1992.
